Cast In Shadows (The Chronicles of Elantra #1)

Cast In Shadows (The Chronicles of Elantra #1) by  Michelle Sagara
Seven years ago Kaylin fled the crime-riddled streets of Nightshade, knowing that something was after her. Children were being murdered -- and all had the same odd markings that mysteriously appeared on her own skin...

Since then, she's learned to read, she's learned to fight and she's become one of the vaunted Hawks who patrol and police the City of Elantra. Alongside the winged Aerians and immortal Barrani, she's made a place for herself, far from the mean streets of her birth.

But children are once again dying, and a dark and familiar pattern is emerging, Kaylin is ordered back into Nightshade with a partner she knows she can't trust, a Dragon lord for a companion and a device to contain her powers -- powers that no other human has. Her task is simple -- find the killer, stop the murders... and survive the attentions of those who claim to be her allies!

What to say about this book. Well I loved it. I really enjoyed the mystery of the marks on her arm. How we didn't have any clue what they were at first and people could only guess as time went on, it really interested me. And I did like how she was her own person, and how she was always late for anything, it was something I could see someone real doing. The other creatures were really fun and interesting something I really didn't expect and was so excited every time she met a new one.

I loved Severn and Tiamaris. Tiamaris was so different and so practical and wise. And a dragon(who wouldn't be excited about that). The way Michelle brought in the government of the castes and all the different species and the history of how it all came together was just so cool. Then Kaylin's history with Severn and when we found out why she wanted to kill him I was like OH. MY. GOD. No wonder she doesn't like him. And everything that happened was so tied together and the banter was really fun and made me smile. Nightshade was also pretty cool, the way he kept saying she was his and all that really made me want to know how that worked out and came together later in the series. And her relationship with the Hawk lord was so cool, he was always so like comforting in the times she needed comfort and it was so sweet, I loved it.

Plus I am really impressed with Michelle's ability to do chapters that are 20-26 pages long usually, I've tried writing before and can't get the chapters to be 3 pages long let alone that many.

All in all this book was really good and I just loved how it all came together and became a really interesting and cool book. It was so good I am going to read the next book when it comes into the library!

I definitely recommend it to sci-fi fantasy lovers. It will really grab you once you get into it.
