The Grendal Affair (SPI Files #1)

The Grendal Affair (SPI Files #1) - Lisa Shearin

Makenna 'Mac' Fraser moved to New York to become a famous journalist. Instead she found herself at a seedy tabloid that got her noticed for what she truly is; a seer. She can see through any disguise, shield, or spell that the paranormal use. So Supernatural Protection & Investigations (SPI) immediately offers her a job. She soon finds herself tracking down creatures that her partner Ian Byrne take care of. All is going okay when a sickle-wielding serial killer turns up killing people. The problem? This killer isn't human, but a descendant of the Grendal. As New Year's Eve is just two days away they have to stop the party, revelry, and loud noise hating Grendal before it's too late or the world will know the secret. Out secret, and time is running out.

This was an interesting book. The action starts almost right off, and you get to see that Mac, while cool and a seer is NOT an agent and has no training that could help when things go south as they always do. While I love the badass heroine who just kills anything in her way, I really enjoyed Mac. She was sarcastic, not perfect and panicked when regular people would. She very rarely lost her cool and even if she did lose is she bounced back quick. And she wasn't super whiny about the kinds of things we'd be whining about in her position. And with her ability to see things others can't, she's often pushed into the front lines and could usually think on her feet where you or I would probably have been frozen and pissing ourselves.

I adored her interaction with the other characters and the others were super interesting and easy to keep up with and know who was who at crazy times. Ian was fun, sarcastic, sweet, and had a sad story that was a reason for wanting to be super protective of her.  At first he seemed kind of like he needed a stick removed from his butt, but he did get better through the book as he really saw how cool she was. I do like him and enjoyed as he playfully teased her when it was needed.

Like all of you I was doing this while reading:
I did have to leave the book, but I was not happy about it
Pretty quick read, enjoyable and the ending is nice and not a giant cliffhanger that has me ripping out my hair and wanting to drive to the bookstore at 3 in the morning to get the next book. I still want the next book, but I think I can be a little patient. Witty and amusing it kept me interested until it was over. Would definitely recommend to sci-fi fantasy readers.
